Southern Portugal: Nature, Sports, and Wild Landscapes

This 8-day, 7-night trip starts and ends in Lisbon, traveling to the Algarve. The adventure is designed for nature lovers, adventure sports enthusiasts, and water sports fans, and it is also suitable for families with teenagers.

Day 1: On Route to Setúbal

After landing at Lisbon Airport, head south, crossing the Tagus River via the iconic 25 de Abril Bridge. Make a brief stop at the colossal statue of Christ at the Sanctuary of Christ the King in Portugal and ascend to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the city, the river, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Continue to Arrábida Natural Park for an enjoyable rock climbing and rappelling activity near the beautiful Convent of Our Lady of Arrábida, which you’ll visit later for a charming view of Setúbal Bay.

Next, head to the coastline, to the small town of Sesimbra, for a visit to the ancient Moorish castle, Castelo de Sesimbra. Proceed into the town for a short rubber boat ride to watch dolphins near the shore. Enjoy some ice cream and a cold drink along the town’s promenade.

Before reaching Setúbal, visit the excellent Bacalhôa Winery in the town of São Lourenço for a tasting of Vinho Verde (“young wine,” which is released three to six months after the grapes are harvested.) Tour the beautiful winery complex and end the day in the port city of Setúbal to spend the night.

Day 2: Setúbal to Lagos

Start your day in the vibrant port town of Setúbal. Enjoy the colorful municipal market, Mercado do Livramento, and stock up on delicious treats and local specialties to fuel your coastal adventure. From there, take a ferry ride across Setúbal Bay to the Costa de Galé peninsula. Explore the fascinating archaeological site of Cetobriga Roman Ruins, remnants of a once-thriving Roman city. Then, cool off with a refreshing swim at one of the peninsula’s pristine beaches.

Continue your journey along the coast, reaching the charming town of Sines. Step into the house of the famous explorer Vasco da Gama and stroll through the picturesque streets of this coastal town. From there, head south to the mouth of the Mira River in the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes for a surfing lesson in the beautiful bay.

Following the Atlantic coastline, you’ll arrive at Farol Cabo Sardão, a stunning rocky beach. Take a hike along the rugged cliffs in this extraordinary nature reserve and observe unique bird nesting sites on the rocks. Further along the coast, discover the idyllic Praia da Arrifana. This stunning beach boasts soft, golden sand, perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun after a day of exploration.

From there, you’ll reach Sagres, the southernmost point of the Portuguese coast. This remote, historic town holds immense significance for Portugal and the world. In the 15th century, a renowned school of navigation was established here, pioneering new sea routes that changed the course of history. Portugal’s exploration efforts during this era opened Europe’s borders to the world.

Visit the Sagres Fortress and take a walk in the Cape St. Vincent Nature Reserve, offering breathtaking views of the powerful Atlantic Ocean and the iconic Pedra das Gaivotas rock formation within the bay.

Day 3: Lagos

Lagos, located in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, is a picturesque city with a rich history and vibrant atmosphere. The city is known for its stunning beaches, ancient walls, historic city center, and numerous water activities.

Immerse yourself in the vibrant marine world of Lagos with a snorkeling adventure. Explore the rocky beaches teeming with colorful fish and fascinating underwater formations. Day 5: Portimão

A truly wonderful way to enjoy the breathtaking coastal scenery of this part of the Algarve coast is on horseback. Embark on a one-hour horseback riding tour, which allows you to connect with nature and appreciate the Algarve’s beauty from a different perspective.

Afterwards, visit the Santa Catarina Fortress. Dating back to 1621, this historic structure, along with its counterpart, the São João do Arade Fortress, guarded the entrance to the Arade River. Climb to the ramparts and enjoy the panoramic views of the sea, Praia da Rocha beach, the bustling Portimão marina, and the charming village of Ferragudo across the river.

For certified divers with an advanced open water diving certificate, a unique opportunity awaits just a few kilometers from the coast. The Ocean Revival project offers the chance to explore an underwater park teeming with marine life. Dive into the fascinating world created by four decommissioned Portuguese Navy ships that were intentionally sunk to create this captivating underwater haven.

Later in the day, take to the skies with an expert instructor for an exciting skydiving adventure along the Algarve coast. Day 7: On Route to Évora

This morning, bid farewell to the stunning Algarve coast and head north, crossing the Alentejo region, the largest area in Portugal.

One more exciting stop awaits! In the nearby town of Lagoa, prepare to be amazed by Sand City. Open to visitors from March to November, this incredible park features giant sculptures meticulously carved from sand. Marvel at the artistry and creativity on display, including towering structures and intricate details.

En route to Évora, make a refreshing stop at the Guadiana Valley Natural Park. Hike the scenic trail along the Guadiana River enjoying the tranquil beauty of the natural landscape, cool waters, and cascading waterfalls nestled amidst the dramatic basalt rocks.

Among its many attractions are an ancient Roman temple, remnants of its city walls, the Igreja de São Francisco church housing the Chapel of Bones (Capela do Ossos) decorated with human bones and skulls, and the grand and imposing cathedral, Se.

Day 8: Heading back to Lisbon

This morning, continue your exploration of the charming city with a visit to the ancient University of Coimbra. Founded in 1559, this institution boasts beautiful courtyards and study rooms adorned with intricate tilework. Next, take a leisurely stroll along the impressive Aqueduto da Água de Prata (Silver Water Aqueduct). Stretching for approximately 5.6 miles, this 16th-century structure is a testament to Roman engineering ingenuity.

Approximately 9 miles west of Évora lies the enigmatic Cromlech of Almendres. This fascinating elliptical formation, composed of 95 granite stones adorned with engravings, dates back to between 4000 and 2000 BCE. The purpose of this Neolithic site remains shrouded in mystery. Some believe it served as a sun worship sanctuary, while others theorize it functioned as a primitive astronomical observatory.

Continuing your journey westward towards Lisbon, prepare to cross Europe’s longest bridge – the Vasco da Gama Bridge, named after the legendary Portuguese explorer. Stretching for an impressive 10.5 miles, this engineering marvel offers breathtaking views as you traverse the Tagus River.

Upon arrival in Lisbon, embark on a unique city tour aboard a HippoTrip, an amphibious vehicle. This exciting experience allows you to explore the city’s vibrant streets and then plunge into the waters of the Tagus River. After this unique urban experience, head back to Lisbon Airport for your return trip home.
