Day 1: Zurich

This morning, drive along Roads 1A and 4A for about 31 miles to reach the city of Schaffhausen and the majestic Rhine Falls, the largest waterfalls in Europe. Formed when the formidable Rhine River cascades over a rocky ledge, the falls create a breathtaking spectacle of turbulent water and mist, spanning a width of about 492 feet and a height of 75 feet. Take a boat to get closer to the falls, feel the refreshing mist, and climb a staircase built into one of the rocks at the center of the waterfall. After visiting the falls, explore the charming medieval architecture of Schaffhausen, boasting an old town with buildings dating back to the Middle Ages.

Continuing along Road 13 for approximately 12 miles, you’ll arrive at Stein am Rhein, renowned for its remarkably preserved medieval architecture. After the visit, continue for approximately 10 miles to the town of Appenzell, an architectural gem. The main street, adorned with traditional wooden houses, is bustling with activity throughout the seasons. Perched at an elevation between 2625 and 3281 feet above sea level, the town is surrounded by greenery in spring and blanketed in snow during the winter. Nestled near the foothills of the Santis Mountain, an impressive peak towering at about 8209 feet, Appenzell offers a picturesque setting.

Day 5: From Appenzell through Chaserrugg to Glarus Nord

This morning, embark on a journey through the town of Urnäsch towards Unterwasser on Road 16, covering a distance of about 31 miles. Upon reaching the parking area in Unterwasser, board a funicular to the intermediate station named Iltios. From there, continue your ascent to the summit of Chaserrugg. The upper station, complete with a restaurant and seating areas warmed by wood stoves, presents a breathtaking panoramic view of the Graubünden Alps. Explore the edges of the cliffs, providing vistas of the Walen Valley and Lake Walen, located approximately 6562 feet below.

From Unterwasser, travel on Roads 16, 43E, and 3 for about 44 miles to the town of Glarus Nord to spend the night.

Day 6: Glarus Nord through Wassen, Aareschlucht, to Interlaken.

Today is a day of alpine travel. You’ll embark on Route 17 for a leisurely 50-mile journey to the town of Wassen. From there, turn onto Route 11, which extends for about 35 miles and takes you through the renowned Susten Pass. Known for its breathtaking scenery, the pass unfolds rugged valleys, glacial-fed streams, and rugged cliffs. At an elevation of 7415 feet, with its breathtaking hairpin turns, the pass leads to the town of Meiringen from where you’ll reach the main parking area for Aareschlucht, the Aare Gorge. This natural wonder showcases the Aare River carving its way through the rocks, creating a narrow, winding gorge with impressive rock formations. At the entrance, you’ll find a visitor center and a restaurant. The trail, partly carved into the rocks and partly consisting of wooden bridges above the flowing waters, will guide you through the site.

After returning to the parking area, travel on Routes 6 and 8 for about 22 miles to the town of Interlaken. Situated between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, Interlaken is a popular base for activities in the region, such as hiking, paragliding, and water sports. Day 7: The Interlaken Area

Today is dedicated to exploring stunning destinations in the Lauterbrunnen Valley and its environs, all conveniently close to Interlaken. Begin by journeying to Trümmelbach Falls, a remarkable series of waterfalls nestled inside the mountain, formed by the melting waters of the Jungfrau Glacier. Wander through picturesque streets adorned with fountains and marvel at the iconic Zytglogge clock tower.

Day 9: From Bern through Mount Pilatus to Lucerne

This morning, head along Roads 25E and 2 for approximately 68 miles to reach the town of Kriens. From Kriens, ascend to the summit of Mount Pilatus using the cable car, enjoying the breathtaking panoramic views of the Swiss Alps and surrounding lakes. Mount Pilatus is accessible through a combination of cable cars and cogwheel trains, providing diverse perspectives of the breathtaking landscape. After descending from Mount Pilatus, take a short drive on Road 2 to the picturesque city of Lucerne. Along the river leading to the lake, explore the iconic Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrücke), which was previously destroyed and later reconstructed. The funicular station is conveniently situated near the summit, featuring a few shops and a café within a hotel that is connected by a tunnel.

Enjoy a hike towards the scenic antenna area, following a circular path with 360-degree breathtaking views. After descending with the funicular to Vitznau, continue your return journey on Road 2, covering a distance of about 44 miles to reach Zürich.
