Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba

Its grand architecture was inspired by the Great Mosque in Damascus. The Mosque was turned into a cathedral in the 13th century when the Christians conquered the city, and new defensive structures were added. In the 16th century, the central part of the cathedral was added.

The Mosque was restored from the 19th to the 21st century, and the various projects uncovered highlights such as the former altar of the Old Chapel and the original structure of the Mosque-Cathedral.

The Mosque-Cathedral is unique in its fusion of the culture and architecture of both the east and west, with Islamic art blending gracefully with Christian features. It features important architectural elements and feats such as 500 columns from Visigoth and Roman ruins with double arches connecting them, a horseshoe design at the bottom with a semi-circular arch at the top, and alternating red and white stone in the arches.

The 177-foot Patio do los Naranjos (bell tower) built to replace the minaret in the 16th century, is an architectural wonder. It has a beautiful courtyard at its entrance, and from the top, a spectacular view of the city. The Mihrab (prayer hall) is another outstanding feature of the Mosque with its exceptional art and architecture. Above the prayer hall is a stunning dome of pointed arches covered with gold mosaic in a circular pattern.

Viana Palace, Cordoba

The impressive palace was the residence of noble families until the end of the 20th century and is, today, a museum. The palace is known for its 12 beautiful patios and spectacular garden as well as for its outstanding display of antique furniture, embossed leather, tapestries, mosaics, and art collection.

Jewish Quarter, Cordoba

Along the Calle de la Juderia, the main street in the Jewish Quarter, you’ll find one of the oldest original synagogues in Spain – the Sinagoga- which dates back to the 14th century. It had been converted to a church in the 16th century and was then the home of the Guild of the Shoemakers until the 19th century.

The famous, charming Calleja de las Flores (Alley of the Flowers), is one of the most-visited streets in Cordoba. In its small square, there are balconies with iron gates full of colorful pots with pleasantly-scented flowers. There is a fountain on one side of the square and a great view of the tower of the nearby Mosque.

In a small square, known originally as the Plaza Tiberiades, stands a remarkable bronze statute of Maimonides, the renowned 12th century Jewish philosopher and doctor who was born in Cordoba.

The Jewish museum, known as The House of Sefarad – House of Memory, is located in the center of the Quarter, on Judios Street. It was opened in 2004 with the goal of keeping the memory of the Jews alive, as, over the centuries following their expulsion in 1492, much has been forgotten. Housed in a building dating back to the 14th century, the museum includes five exhibition halls which are centered around a courtyard, and it gives a glimpse into the daily life of the Jews in Cordoba as well as their festivals, music, and Sephardic traditions.

The El Zoco Market, the municipal market (Souk) of Cordoba, is also located here. The first craft market in Spain, you can still find ceramic, silver, and leather handicrafts by local artisans.

Medina Azahara, Cordoba

The area’s developed infrastructure includes large official halls, mosques, administrative and government offices, a mint, residential buildings, bath and aqueducts, pools and gardens.
Two of the wings of the palace have been restored, and one of them has a beautiful marble floor as well as magnificent flower decorations on the walls, arches, and columns.
