The nature reserve is formed by two streams: Nahal David on the northern side and Nahal Arugot on the southern side, under the cliff on which Kibbutz Ein Gedi is built. Water flows in the streams all year round, and there are marked walking paths. Along the way, you’ll find goats and rock rabbits as well as a wide variety of birds. There are desert and tropical plants growing in the narrow gorges near the water, and there are several waterfalls and natural pools in which to cool off from the desert heat.

The history of Ein Gedi goes back to biblical times. It is the place where King David ran to after his battle with Goliath when Saul, the first king of Israel, wanted to kill him.

For archeology enthusiasts, on the plateau above Nahal David there is a temple from the Chalcolithic period about 6,000 years ago, at the time when copper tools replaced stone tools. Not far from the reserve, an ancient Jewish synagogue from the Roman period was discovered with an inscription in Aramaic. The inscription curses the spreaders of slander and those who betrayed the community's secret which was, it seems, the process of growing persimmons and making them into perfume.

Kibbutz Ein Gedi, established in 1953 as a military outpost, is located on a plateau above Nahal Arugot. Three years later, it became a kibbutz though, due to its remote location, it was isolated from much of the country. In 1967, after the Six Day War, a new highway was constructed which enabled easy access to the kibbutz, and it became a center of Dead Sea tourism. The kibbutz invested in their infrastructure, including the planting of an outstanding botanical garden with desert, subtropical, and tropical plants and flowers from all over the world. It was recognized in 1994 by the International Association of Botanical Gardens.

The well-known Ahava cosmetics factory is located at the entrance to the kibbutz, and you can see how their products are manufactured – and purchase them in the factory store.

The Ein Gedi Hotel, located on the kibbutz, is a favorite tourist destination. It includes a pampering spa with huge windows from which you can enjoy the towering mountain views while floating in the baths with warm salt water from the Dead Sea. There is also an excellent youth hostel in Ein Gedi with a nice view of the Dead Sea and Nahal David.

Ein Gedi provides a great base for jeep tours in the Judean Desert, and Jerusalem and Jericho are also not far away. It is an ideal place for a relaxing vacation in the heart of the desert near the Dead Sea!
